DELAWARE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN STATE BOARD MEETING Minutes of June 10, 2006 The meeting was called to order at 9:35 a. m. by State President, Barbara Mullin. Our meeting was held at the Wayside Inn in Smyrna, Delaware. The incoming and outgoing state board members introduced themselves. Dr. Maisha Britt was introduced as the incoming state president from the Dover Branch. There was one correction to the secretary’s minutes from the January 7th state board meeting. The Wilmington Branch stated that their report should say book sale not bake sale. Dr. Kathy Jacobs made a motion to approve the minutes and Anita Sterling seconded the motion. The minutes were approved as corrected. Anita Sterling, Treasurer, proposed the 2006-2007 Delaware State AAUW budget. She reported that there was a balance of $11,208.54, and $5,687.29 in a CD. She stated that expenses were minimal. Irene Holt made a motion to approve the budget and Maria Simoes seconded the motion. The budget was approved as proposed. STATE CONVENTION REPORT: Margaret Prouse, Program Vice-President, Anita Sterling, and Dr. Dorene Petrosky, Dover Branch President, made their individual reports on the State Convention. Dr. Peg Prouse submitted a “Conference Recap” on the 64th State Convention at the Duncan Center Overlook in Dover, Delaware. The convention was hosted by the Dover Branch and the keynote speaker was Lizabeth S. Mullens. It featured a presentation by the Penn State Women’s Leadership Initiative and the program focused on the basics of leadership and team building in young college women. The hands-on team building was a huge success. There was also a lively skit entitled, “Reviving the Dead Ladies,” presented by AAUW members. Anita Sterling announced that the financial aspect of the convention came in under the budget by $294.83. The membership fiscal year ends on June 30, 2006. The issue of dual membership by some AAUW members was addressed. Members can belong to more than one branch; however, this presents a problem in paying dues. The state by-laws do not address this. There is also no national or state policy as to where these members pay national dues. If these members do not pay a state its dues, they cannot vote on the state budget. It was decided to make a policy change. The change proposed stated that AAUW Delaware permit dual members whose branch membership includes a primary branch in a state or commonwealth other than Delaware and a secondary branch in Delaware be given the option to pay dues to AAUW Delaware at their discretion. Laura Singleton, Secretary, moved to accept the proposal and Ada May Shipley, Diversity Chair, seconded the motion. The change was approved as stated. Dorene Petrosky concluded that the State Convention at the Duncan Center was very well done. It was a very pleasant event and the facilities, attendance, and participation was good. They had received no negative comments. Dr. Kathleen Jacobs, Educational Foundation Chair, interjected that the AAUW Educational Foundation Named Gift Honorees traditionally honor a member that has made a contribution to AAUW. Frequently, that individual has been the most recent past president of the Delaware State AAUW. However, Dr. Jacobs did not attend the last board meeting and past President Shirley Seibert was overlooked for this honor. Usually the EF proposes and the State Board votes on this. Therefore, for the year 2004, Shirley Seibert should be thus honored. Kathleen Kobus, Co-President of the Middletown Branch, made a motion to change the name of the award. Dr. Dorene Petrosky seconded the motion. The motion was carried to change the title to AAUW Educational Foundation State Honorees. MAR CONVENTION REPORT: President Barbara welcomed the new board. She attended the MAR Conference in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on March 18th and 19th of this year. The keynote address was by Dr. Dana Lightman on “Developing Leadership with a Positive Edge.” Dr. John McHugh talked about the “Real Eleanor Roosevelt” at dinner. Sally Chamberlain and Susan Nenstiel led a conference on EF/LAF Power. Refer to the summary of the MAR Conference submitted on line for more details. EF REPORT: Dr. Kathy Jacobs reported that the Delaware State AAUW Educational Foundation has exceeded its donations to national. The board, approved at the national level, to give $35,053.82 to the Gail Ames and $35,280.42 to the Hilda Davis funds. STRATEGIC PLANNING: Marie Mayor, Membership Vice-President, could not attend the state board meeting today. The strategic planning final report from the branches regarded increasing membership. To get new members to join caused branches to devise new strategies to attract prospective members. Irene Holt, Co-President of Coastal-Georgetown, said to get the AAUW name out there by having the publicity chair submit articles to the local paper. They hold membership teas to invite new members and the goals of AAUW are discussed. They also have a book club, discussion group, and walking group. The program chair has planned evening meetings as well. They achieved their goal of 74 members. Kathleen Kobus, Co-President of the Middletown branch, invites new members to meetings. They put announcements of meeting times and speakers in the newspaper. They also set up an AAUW booth at the annual peach festival. The branch has discussed how big do they want to get. They have increased membership from 22 in 2005 to 26 as of June 2006. The Seaford Branch President, Diane LeCompte, said that they use a membership incentive by paying the association dues for an invited guest. They have a problem with members supporting the meetings and the bulk of the members are veterans. They have petitioned national to change the name of their branch to the Western Sussex AAUW Branch. In 2006, there are 47 members. Dr. Dorene Petrosky, Dover Branch President, said that there are presently 42 members. The branch advertises in the Delaware State News and the Dover Post. They try to recruit new teachers as members. There is a scholarship awarded each year to several high school seniors and also a returning women’s scholarship award. These are helpful in attracting new members. Cinda Crane, Wilmington Branch President, could not attend the meeting. Carolyn Diehl, Scholarship, and Ann DeFelice, Newsletter, stated that there are 258 members. There is an annual book sale in Wilmington. The branch awarded $50,000 in scholarships to twenty-two students this year. Alice Ryan, Historian, represented the Newark Branch. Newark works with Wilmington on their salad supper fundraiser. They also hold an annual Spring Math/Science Luncheon for high school juniors with the Coastal Georgetown Branch. Their membership is at 70 members. There was a move to permit dual membership by Ann DeFelice. Kathy Jacobs seconded the motion. Dual membership may help to increase membership. FUTURE PLANS FOR AAUW: After lunch, President Barbara officially passed the gavel to Dr. Maisha Britt as State President. She also thanked the various chairs for their service to the association. New President, Maisha, and EF Chair, Kathy, will attend a Conference of State Leaders in Washington, DC from June 23rd to the 25th. The State Local Branches will send their newsletters to President Maisha. One of her future goals for AAUW Delaware is to have a diversity chair for every branch. Locations for the September 9th board meeting were discussed. Maisha’s new e-mail address is: maibritt@verizon.net.
