Newark Activities

Interest groups include Monday Book Group, Drama/Book Group, Great Decisions Discussion Group, Saturday Night Gourmet, Antiques Group. Members meet monthly at the home of the Interest Group host or other sites, as planned. For referrals, please contact the branch president.

Annual activity, in partnership with Coastal-Georgetown, is the statewide Math Science Luncheon honoring high school junior women who excel in the STEM fields. The Newark Branch awards an Outstanding Senior Woman scholarship to a UD graduating senior and supports two UD junior women to attend the National Conference of College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL).

Monthly programs feature speakers on varied topics followed by Newark Branch business and discussions. Our general schedule is September through May (except December). Our meetings are open to the public; visitors and guests are always welcome. Special events are held elsewhere, as noted, but regular branch meetings are held at the Newark Free Library at the East End of Main Street in Newark.Location:

Speaker: Linda Lennon - Objects Conservation. Linda Lennon is an objects conservator and graduate of the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation. As proprietor of Linda Lennon Objects Conservation in Newark, she treats a variety of objects composed of materials such as ceramics, glass, metals, stone, leather, wood, and other plant and animal materials as well as objects made with a combination of these materials. In this program on Objects Conservation, she will first discuss the general care and storage of a variety of materials that people may have in their collections and will then show examples of some object treatments that she has completed on a range of different materials.

Speaker: Gabrielle Parkin - How to Read a Book of Hours. Gabrielle Parkin is a PhD candidate in late medieval English literature at the University of Delaware. Her current research looks at how books were used in the daily lives of the merchant and artisan classes in the Middle Ages. Books of hours, admired for their beautiful illuminated pages, are often referred to as the "medieval bestseller." Parkin will contextualize the production and use of books of hours in the 14th-16th centuries, highlighting how and why books of hours were frequently associated with female spirituality and education.

Sunday April 10th - Math Science Honors luncheon, special event at Trabant Student Center, UD Campus, Newark

Newark and Coastal-Georgetown branches host this statewide honors event recognizing one outstanding junior woman from each of the state's public and private high schools. These young women are saluted for their accomplishments in the STEM fields. Speaker: Dr. Clytrice Watson, Delaware State University Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences and Program Director for the Bachelor of Science in Forensic Biology.

UD Outstanding Senior Woman award and branch named gift awards will be presented. Bring a salad to share. Drinks provided.
